The Night is Defying by Chloe C. Peñaranda
Blurb
Vicious Nightmares Need Peaceful Dreams.
Shaken from the aftermath of the Libertatem, the newly found star-maiden Astraea is determined to keep her freedom, even at the cost of betraying her heart. But time is running out to recover her memories with the hole it will unveil her killer.
Embarking on a journey to discover her past, Astraea’s awakening power spins the hourglass on a history threatening to repeat itself. While Nyte tries to regain control of the vampires hungry for bloodshed, a sinister plan by his brother to overthrow him sparks a dangerous feud. But are they willing to wear the blood of their kin to see it through?
For nothing in the past ever stays buried. Friends have turned into foes, brothers have turned into enemies, and what was written in the stars long ago ignites again in two hearts that were never meant to be. Letting Astraea go would save the world from darkness, but Nyte is no hero. It seems no monster is heartless, and no angel is without sin.
Rating and Review
Overall Rating: 1.5/5 stars
Background
I gave the first book 2.5/5 stars because I thought it was okay. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever read, but it wasn't good either, and it was definitely my most disappointing read last year because the book is so pretty. This one, though?! Oh my gosh, this book was so bad! It was unedited to a fucking T. I found soooo many mistakes, and I don't understand how a traditionally published book was this unedited.
What I Didn't Like:
This book is. not. fucking. edited. I have a theory that this traditional publishing company used Ingram Spark to print their books and uploaded “dummy files” that weren’t edited to put the book up for pre-order. And because that printing company prints their books once people start ordering, I received a book with the “dummy file.” And I fucking hate it! I spent $32.99 on this! Why didn’t you just upload the finished book???? Why upload a “dummy file” and risk customers buying an unfinished product???????????? I’ve never read a book with THIS many typos and line editing mistakes in my entire life. There were times words were repeated twice, and some quotation marks weren’t there when there was dialogue. WHAT IS THIS????????????
This book had absolutely NO PLOT. NOTHING happened outside of the last 15% of the book. There were events, sure, but literally no plot. And a lot of the events made the nonexistent plot so much more fucking confusing.
The writing. I’ve never read something so repetitive before. I FUCKING GET IT!!! THEY WERE ENEMIES!!!! OKAY! I GET IT!!!!!! UGGGGGHHHHH! Also, the word assault should not be used in smut. Especially repeatedly.
The sex scene where Nyte fucks Astraea with his shadow magic. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?????????? And why did it scar me? Then they follow that up with fucking in an open window?????????
The two main characters. Especially Nyte. He is literally one of the worst fictional men I’ve read about. I read a series last year that had two men that I didn’t like. Compared to Nyte, I’d rather have a threesome with those two men than have sex with Nyte. I’m so fucking serious. And Astraea is so fucking confusing as a character. She hates Nyte but also loves him?????????? I’m so confused!!
The amount of sex scenes there were. Like, don’t get me wrong, there are times I am okay with lots of sex in a book. The thing is: I have to like the characters. If I don’t, I just want the smut to end and die. But no, NO! This book just kept having them happen!!!!
I predicted the pretty obvious plot twist of who actually killed Astraea in the past.
She gets horny from drinking his blood.
I’ll be honest, there’s so much more that I could complain about. You should see my annotations. I’m gonna stop here before I keel over.
What I Did Like:
Eltanin the dragon
I liked the side characters more than the main characters. Like the friend groups of Nyte and Astraea, I really liked those characters.
Like the first book, there were some moments the writing was actually good, but because of the context from the rest of the book, it made the quotes unlikable.
The special edition, despite how awful the book actually is.
Final Thoughts
So far, this is easily the worst book I’ve read this year. I've never been so confused, enraged, and misled in my life. I knew this book wouldn’t be that great, but it’s still worse than I thought. I gave the first book 2.5 stars because I thought it was okay. This book gets 1.5 stars because I truly didn’t like it. Lesson to publishers: upload the final draft of the book before putting it up for preorder. Because I’m convinced this book is a first draft.
